No sooner than children were beginning to return to school in many countries, and in others getting back to some kind of normality, the world has plunged into another disaster – that of war in Ukraine. For small children, in Europe in particular, dealing with two major challenges to normality and world order is difficult to take in. This article in the New York Times highlights the challenges for teachers trying to make sense of for youngsters where “no conflict they are old enough to remember has been so widely displayed on their TikTok feeds as the war in Ukraine, or so close to home”. Teachers have been issued with guidelines in many countries as to how to approach the subject and guide discussion around fundamental rights of protecting one’s homeland. One challenge has been to try and avoid access and giving credibility to false coverage: verified sources of information are crucial and is one great teaching point for children to take away in this age of fake news.
