Each country’s education system tends to be viewed internally as the best it possibly could be. This article from The Times suggests that laggards in the league tables of the OECD’s Pisa tables should try to look at the leaderboard and try to learn from their success. Estonia, “has the best education system in Europe, if not the industrialised world”, with it´s forward-thinking tech and skills-focused approach, and way ahead of England which is seen as very traditional. Part of this success is the emphasis on digitalisation and entrepreneurship, which are, today more than ever, valued by the world of business, especially one that has the highest number of startups proportionately than anywhere else in Europe. Key to this success has been using technology in every subject possible, so that it is seen as a part of life and learning and not a specific subject per se. Classes centre on “problem-solving, critical thinking, values, citizenship, entrepreneurship and digital skills” and education has become apolitical. Why is it then that other countries cannot replicate this approach? This cannot happen overnight but unless a similar way forward is made a priority in education change will never happen…
