With over 800 million users Tik Tok is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Essentially it is an app for making and sharing short videos, aimed at young teenagers. Most youngsters know it well and most parents probably won´t, but are becoming increasingly exposed to it, normally through their children. This Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, had been slow to grow initially, but since attracting a more international audience it is the platform of the moment. The latest step by the company is now to invest €13 million launching a learning platform for short-form video and entertainment content. This move has attracted much interest and even Cambridge University has agreed to share research videos and fact-based content. While we applaud the extension of the app to include content for education and in this help and support the learning process we hope that the safety and security of children online is taken very seriously.
