While the media has covered, to the point of boredom, the pandemic, there has been a focus mainly on the elderly, who were worst affected in terms of mortality. There is another story that has not been discussed much yet. According to this article by the BBC, and Northern Ireland´s mental health champion Professor Siobhan O’Neill, young people have been “more heavily impacted by the pandemic and the restrictions than any other age group”. More so those children with Special Education Needs (SEN) who have experienced greater “mental ill health, behavioural, emotional and attention difficulties”. Funding does need to be made available to help this vulnerable group cope with their problems and challenges and help them get back to some kind of normality and not fall into self-harming and in some cases injuring their parents.
